High-res AUTOMOBILE ASSEMBLY IN THE USSR. A glimpse inside the Soviet Union’s main factory for Kalashnikov assault-rifle production, the Izhevsk Machine, Engineering, and Motor Plant Complex. Located in Izhevsk, in what was known at the time this image was made as the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic.  According to official Soviet statements at the start of the Cold War, the plant was engaged in the manufacture of automobiles. Official “covers” for arm plants were part of the boiler plate for civil discourse in the USSR. In this case, it was an absurd precaution; the mammoth arms complex had been a gun works for more than a century, reaching deep into czarist times. The complex currently does business under the name IZHMASH. It has claimed to be Russia’s largest manufacturer firearms, though it has struggled for business since the Soviet Union fell and its long, subsidized heyday abruptly stopped.
