Saudi Arabian Aid to Syria’s Antigovernment Fighters.
N.R. Jenzen-Jones, with the help of timely and thorough field work and analysis by Damien Spleeters, has an excellent post providing much-needed context to a BBC drive-by on the recent spotting of a wooden munitions crate in Aleppo that bore a shipping label from Ukraine to Saudi Arabia.
We’ll add more soon, but first read Nic here.
The short of it: This is most likely small-arms ammunition, not “naval weapons or missile complexes,” as the BBC report might have led readers to believe. And if it is small-arms ammunition, then that’s an interesting development, and an excellent find to get on record. It’s also not a surprise, given that the Saudis and the Qataris have openly acknowledged providing limited military assistance to the rebels.
A hat tip to Nic and Damien, two responsible arms researchers, putting matters right.
